Kids Book Review: The Pomegranate Witch & How to Catch a Monster

Thank you Raincoast Books for sending us these Halloween books to enjoy!

Halloween is in a few days and although today has been a dreary, windy day and snow has blanketed our streets the excitement is still building up!

To help us pass the time and keep the kids busy we divulge in Halloween themed activities; cuddling up to watch some family-friendly Halloween movies, crafts and creating some Halloween treats in the kitchen. But most of all, our bedtime stories include fun Halloween books that won’t give Colton nightmares.

Raincoast Books knows how much we love to read and graciously provided us with 2 Halloween titles that have become quite popular in our house!

How to Catch a Monster

I don’t think I have to tell you again how much we love the How to Catch a… books written by Adam Wallace. In fact, we love them so much that we had just bought How to Catch a Monster from Colton’s school book fair before we were sent this hardcover one from Raincoast Books, so we decided to donate our other book to his class so they could enjoy them as much as we do!

How to Catch a Monster

“Get ready to laugh as a young ninja heads into the closet to meet the monster that’s been so scary night after night! But what if things aren’t what they seem and our monster isn’t scary at all? What if our ninja hero is about to make a friend of the strangest sort?

If you dare to travel beyond the closet door and into the land of the monsters… you might just find the very best reward of all. But with robots, lava pie, and a smattering of traps-catching monsters is no easy business!

Is there a monster living in your closet? Are you brave enough to catch him? Parents and children will love sharing this fun and inventive picture book, which reminds us that things aren’t always as scary as they seem.”

The Pomegranate Witch

To be totally honest, when I started to read this book I immediately thought Colton wasn’t going to get it – the words seemed to be a little to advance in a poetic sort of way. However, his eyes were glued to the book the entire time, I didn’t hear a peep from him until I was done reading the book and the words that came out of his mouth were “That was SO AWESOME!!!” I have a feeling this one is going to be read about a couple more…hundred times within the next few days and that’s okay with me because it really is a fun story to read!

The Pomegranate Witch

“When scary old tree blooms with the most beautiful pomegranates ever seen, the neighborhood kids’ mouths water with anticipation. But the tree isn’t theirs-and it has a protector! So begins the Pomegranate War, a fun, rollicking, rhyming tale of a battle between the sly, plucky young rascals and their wry, witchy neighbor who may have more than one trick up her sleeve. This delectable romp from award-winning children’s poet Denise Doyen and acclaimed illustrator Eliza Wheeler honors classic children’s literature and revels in nostalgia for free-to-roam days full of playful invention.”

What do you and your family do to get ready for Halloween? Read any good family-friendly Halloween books lately? I’d love for you to share some inspiration in the comments!
