March 17 has been a day I have been looking forward to for over a  month now.  Perhaps it’s partly because January and February are some of the toughest months to get through as a mother.  Cold and messy weather, sick kids, and not a ton of sun where we live contribute to this.  That’s why when St. Patty’s Day hits it’s always a happy event!  Beyond the return of warm weather, the kids absolutely love it too.  Decorating the house with leprechauns, shamrocks, rainbows, and pots of gold is something the whole family can get involved in and enjoy.  But this year, try out a little something different – throw a little get-together for your kids and their friends!  You’ll be the best mom or dad ever, at least for a few hours.

St. Patrick’s Day is on a Monday this year.  Organizing a party on the Friday before might be a better idea but to each his or her own.  Send out your invitation cards a week or so before the big event and have your child give it out to friends at school (or send the cards directly to parents if you have second thoughts of the card actually reaching its destination!) Since the party will have snacks and drinks, stock up on your disposable table cloths and disposable party supplies, no one wants to make a store run with a party already in progress.


Find The Pot Of Gold

While Easter is coming up in about a month and Easter egg hunts are a must, try a St. Patrick’s Day scavenger hunt!  This is best done at the onset of a party because kids will be full of energy and ready to run around like crazed little leprechauns as they search for me gold.  Now you can do this either hiding individual chocolate or plastic coins around the house (or outdoors dependent on weather). Give each child a small plastic pot/basket for storing their coins in and a leprechaun hat of which you can probably find at your local $1 store or Target.  Have the kids start searching at the same time so nobody gets an unfair advantage.  The child that brings in the most coins gets a special prize!

Shamrock Snack Time

After the kids start huffing and puffing after all that running around and searching for gold coins, offering a little snack and some punch (green Tampico anyone?) will recharge their little engines. Pillsbury makes some tasty and ready-to-bake sugar cookies that you place directly onto a cookie sheet and into the oven.  If you’ve got the time and want to make some cookies yourself, that can be a great idea too!  Another idea may be to bake plain non-decorated cookies and then have the kids decorate the cookies themselves with green glitter, green icing, and sprinkle on tiny shamrock sugar pieces!

Create-A-Shirt

Following snack time, holding another little activity before the kids’ parents pick them up can serve both as something fun to do and a way they can create their own party favors!  This can be done many different ways, but something I’m going to try this year is to hold a shirt creation workshop. Buy some packages of plain white tee-shirts, green and gold paints, colored markers, and some St. Patrick’s Day- themed stencils.  Let the kids experiment and help them out with some of your own artistic abilities.

Don’t forget to let the shirts dry.  Nothing is more disappointing to see a child having paint or marker all over their hands, face, and clothes when the problem could have been avoided. Allow the shirts15-20 minutes to dry and while the children are waiting settle them down with an episode or two of Spongebob.  When the parents arrive, send each child home with their special shirt, pot full of gold plastic hat, and a happy face.  Your kids and their friends will absolutely love it and it’s just the thing to get St. Patrick’s Day weekend started off right!
