Rainy Day Activities for Kids

It’s that time of year. The time of year that the weather can be unpredictable. One minute it can be sunny and beautiful, and the next it can be raining. If your children are getting a little stir crazy cooped up indoors, and you are feeling the same, there are a few things you can do to make rainy days more bearable and even fun.
Visit the Library
Many local libraries host story times, activities and classes to attend. The library in your neighbourhood is a fantastic rainy-day resource.
Build a Blanket Fort
Grab all the blankets you have in the house and construct a beautiful blanket fort in the living room. Don’t forget all the pillows and stuffed animals. If you want to get really creative, you can decorate the inside with Christmas lights. Once the fort has been constructed, settle in with a bowl of popcorn and watch a movie together inside.

Make a Cardboard Box Town
Let your children’s imaginations run wild and create a cardboard box town. If you have a large cardboard box, break it down and draw bridges, roadways, track and parking lots on it. You can even use building blocks to create structures.
Make Shadow Puppets
Close all the curtains and turn off the lights, grab a flashlight and take turns making shadow puppets on the walls with your hands. Have a contest to see who can make the best shapes.
Make Play Dough
Kids will have a blast creating play dough from scratch. Give them free reign to create their own food colouring combinations for their play dough, then see what they can make with them.
Bake
There are so many great benefits to getting in the kitchen with your children and creating recipes together. Bake cookies and see what crazy add-ins you can come up with or bake cupcakes and have a decorating contest. The possibilities are endless, and delicious.

Write a Letter
The nostalgia of receiving a handwritten letter or card in the mail these days is undeniable. Use glitter, coloured pens and stickers to add pops of colour to your letters. This would be an amazing surprise for grandparents, and a great way for your children to practice their writing skills.
Have an Indoor Picnic
Who says a great picnic must be outdoors? If the weather doesn’t permit an outdoor feast, have on in your living room. Set out a table cloth on the floor, pack a picnic basket and enjoy.
Other Great Indoor Activities
- Play hide and seek.
- Have a dance contest.
- Host a movie marathon.
- Finger paint with chocolate pudding.
- Make sock puppets and put on a puppet show
- Have a spa day – Paint nails, do hair and put on homemade face masks.
- Play board games.
The rain doesn’t have to ruin all your fun. There are plenty of ways to stay busy and entertained indoors. Make the best of a rainy day with your kids by getting creative. Sometimes, the simple things are the most fun.

I always found it difficult when my kids were small to find things to keep them occupied on rainy days. We did manage but you have some great ideas here too.
