First French Dictionary & My First French Book At Home #Review + #Giveaway

Parlez-vous français? Neither do I or my husband. In fact, besides the mandatory French classes, I took up till grade 9, I really don’t know a whole lot of Canada’s “other” first language.

It seems whenever you look in the paper under the WANTED headlines, the majority of jobs posted ask for “a bilingual speaking applicant”. As unfortunate as this is for me, it’s something I’ve learned from and therefore want my kids to be bilingual, this is one of the reasons why we chose a french immersion school for our boys.

The earlier a child learns a second language the easier it will be.

There are two titles that can help you and your child from DK Canada, in particular, come to mind when I write this post:

First French Picture Dictionary - 2nd Canadian Edition

This book is just about as much mine as it is Colton’s.

I remember when Lucas was in kindergarten, he’d bring books home nightly which was great, except they were in French and he didn’t know how to read yet. I spent a lot of nights using google translator or YouTube trying to make sure I wasn’t messing up the pronunciation - the last thing I wanted to do was teach him the wrong way to say the words.

Luckily, we have Lucas to help us teach Colton French but just in case he’s busy doing his own thing, the First French Picture Dictionary not only has over 2000 words and phrases but it also features hundreds of pictures and offers easy-to-follow pronunciations - no more mess ups from me.

My First French Book: At Home

This book is more for toddlers than it is for a child who is about to enter kindergarten, but a non-speaking French family such as ours has to start somewhere, and what better place to start than in the home.

Each section is laid out with:

colourful themed pictures that will appeal to any child’s eye
both the English and French word(s) describing the picture
questions in English and French to get your child’s brain working in full force, including searching for the images highlighting the tab chosen

Having tools to help parents like myself help their kids learn French as a second language is so important - what better tool to use for learning than books!

Is your child learning a second language? What tools do you use to help them?

Enter to win…

ONE lucky CANADIAN reader will WIN a copy of MY FIRST FRENCH BOOK AT HOME and FIRST FRENCH PICTURE DICTIONARY – giveaway open to Canada ONLY ends 9/7.

DISCLOSURE: Thank you DK Canada for supplying us with the tools to conduct this review and help with my pronunciation of the French language so my oldest can stop laughing at me when I read.

I’m excited about the MY FIRST FRENCH BOOK AT HOME. If I was lucky enough to win this would be for one of my grandsons (and then passed down to his two sisters). They are being brought up speaking 3 languages - English, French and German with a bit of Vietnamese thrown in for good measure. My grandson can’t read yet, he’s only 5 yrs old and his sisters are younger so this would be the first book for them to enjoy. 🙂

I’m excited about the First French picture dictionary because the colours are vivid and I think my son would have a fun time looking at it and learning a little bit of French.

I am super excited about the First French Picture Dictionary book because my daughter is starting French Immersion kindergarten this fall and I think this book would be very helpful for her - so far she only knows a few very basic French words.

  • Holly Myke

I am most excited for the French dictionary. My daughter had her first year of French last year and struggled some. Anything would be helpful to her and get a head start with the other siblings

I would love both for my classroom! (I teach core french!). But the First French Picture Dictionary would probably be the most useful.

Both of the books look great but if I had to choose, I would say the First French Picture Dictionary – 2nd Canadian Edition

I’d love to win “My First French Picture Dictionary” because I want my daughter to grow up learning two languages, as it opens so many doors for her. Plus my mother is a French teacher, and this would make her so happy to know her granddaughter is starting French early!

Both of these books look great, but will choose the First French Picture Dictionary – 2nd Canadian Edition. My grandson is in French Emersion and starting grade 3, so it would make a terrific reference book for him.

i think my daughter would enjoy the First French Picture Dictionary more. She focuses more on the pictures and thinks for a bit. It’s good to learn another language I wish I would’ve kept up with French when I was in school

I am most excited about The First French Picture Dictionary because the colours and pictures look so sharp and appealing.

My First Picture Dictionary would be my first choice of these books. Children learn so much when they are young so this would help my grandson learn some french words. He has already picked up a few Spanish words from watching television so I am sure he would enjoy this book.
